Settlement of $145 million for Hospital Bribery & Kickbacks
Numerous cases of violations of Medicaid and Medicare funds continue to be filed in courts despite efforts to achieve fairness in providing federal health care programs. In one notable case, two subsidiary hospitals of a nationwide healthcare system allegedly paid bribes and kickbacks to clinics serving primarily undocumented women in exchange of referrals to the defendants' facilities. Both hospitals pled guilty. The amount of settlement: a whopping $145 million. Read the blog post to learn more about these cases.

Bill Acevedo joined Trinity Underwriting Managers as Claims Manager on March 21, 2018. He has over 30 years of experience including positions at York Risk Services, Crum & Forster, The Home Insurance Company, and Zurich American Insurance Group. A former Marine, he holds CPCU, AIC, AIS, and SCLA designations.
Monika Aguirre joined United Valley Insurance Services as Member Relationship Manager on February 26, 2018. Her main task is handling member relationships in Northern and Central California. Monika will also take the lead managing United Valley’s Preferred Vendor relationships. She has over 25 years of insurance experience with Aetna, most recently as the Director of Third Party Administrator Relations, where she was responsible for building and maintaining agency relationships.
Daniel Alexander Lothian was promoted to Underwriting Manager, Environmental for UK & Ireland of XL Catlin, effective March 1, 2018. He is responsible for the growth of environmental insurance business in the UK & Ireland.
Nick Blankenship joined Trinity Underwriting Managers as Broker on March 21, 2018. A former Marine, he previously served as Senior Underwriter for ProSight Specialty Insurance where he managed a portfolio of transportation and public auto risk. Prior to that, Nick served as an Underwriter in the transportation practice group of State Auto Insurance Company. He holds an Associate in underwriting designation from the Insurance Institute of America.
Rose Calpin-Dewey has joined Alliant Insurance’s Energy and Marine Group as First Vice President. She will provide insurance and risk advisory services to energy and marine clients across the United States.
Duncan Childs joined Ed Broking as Wordings Advisory Manager for the Professional & Executive Risk team on March 13, 2018. He has nearly two decades of experience in insurance law and will be responsible for drafting bespoke policy wordings for Ed’s clients. Duncan joins from global law firm Eversheds Sutherland where he served in the specialist insurance coverage team acting on behalf of clients from across the insurance business landscape. Prior to this he worked at insurance law specialists Davies Lavery (now Kennedys) acting on behalf of (re)insurers and defending professional indemnity claims. Duncan is a qualified lawyer and trained at specialist insurance law firm, Beachcroft.
Jennifer Chung joined Crystal & Company as Managing Director and Team Lead of the Employee Benefits Services department on November 13, 2017. Among other responsibilities, she oversees the onboarding of new clients and has a strong focus on establishing new employee benefits channel partnerships and managing client retention. Prior to joining Crystal & Company, Jennifer was an Account Executive at Integro Insurance Brokers.
Mark Dion has joined Founders Professional as Vice President & Professional Liability Practice Leader. He will work hand-in-hand with retail insurance agencies throughout the country in securing coverage for their clients’ professional liability insurance risks across all industries.
Brittany Negron has been named a Consultant within the Real Estate Practice of New Day Underwriting Managers LLC in February 2018. Her responsibilities include working with New Day’s partners to identify optimal environmental risk management solutions for the chemical, petrochemical, energy, manufacturing, commercial and habitational real estate, universities, and healthcare industries. While an employee of AGEISS Inc., a supplier of engineering and environmental services to federal agencies nationwide, Negron served as an environmental scientist at Moody Air Force Base near Valdosta, GA.
Katherine Nellums joined CFC as Marketing Director in January 2018. She has 15 years of experience driving strategic communications and marketing programmes for growth stage and newly public companies in Silicon Valley and London, most recently as VP of marketing at LoopUp. As Marketing Director, Katherine will oversee CFC’s global marketing strategy and the execution of programs aimed at increasing brand awareness and generating demand for CFC’s broad range of specialist and emerging risk insurance products and services.
Victoria Phillips has been appointed Energy Underwriter at Canopius. She has more than a decade of broking experience. Victoria began her career at Miller in London as a facultative reinsurance broker, before moving to Marsh in Singapore. Having joined in 2011 as offshore construction broker, she became leader of that team, before being promoted to lead the combined Upstream Operational and Offshore Construction teams in 2016, most recently as senior vice president.
Ludovic Ruiller was promoted to Underwriting Manager, Environmental, France & Benelux of XL Catlin on April 1, 2018. He is responsible for the growth of environmental insurance business in France and Benelux.
Peter Samuel joined CFC as Human Resources Director in February 2018. He has over 16 years of experience in HR most recently as Global HR Director for HiFX where he led and implemented HR strategy across Europe, North America and Australasia. Peter will spearhead CFC’s people strategy including talent management, recruitment, learning and development, and organisational planning.
Jonathan Schriber was appointed Head of Structured Risk, North America P&C at PartnerRe on March 1, 2018. He has extensive experience in structured risk solutions, having specialized in this line of business for much of his 24-year reinsurance career. Jonathan will report to Dick Sanford, Head of North America P&C and President of PartnerRe U.S. Most recently, he was Chief Underwriting Officer, Global Reinsurance at W.R. Berkley Corporation where he was involved in overall underwriting strategy, aggregate management and new product development. Jonathan joined Berkley Re America in July 2007 to manage the North American brokered treaty unit where he developed new lines of business including structured risk and successfully opened a Canadian branch.
Janet Selnes was named Assistant Vice President – broker distribution for Church Mutual Insurance Company on February 12, 2018. She joined Church Mutual in 2003 as a Regional Representative, moving through several positions of increasing responsibility. Janet has played a pivotal role in the company’s sales growth and market expansion.
Todd Sutherland joined XL Catlin as Regional Leader, U.S. North Central on March 26, 2018. He will lead the regional Broker and Client Management team in Chicago, working with brokers and clients throughout the North Central region of the U.S., to give them easy access XL Catlin’s multi-line property, casualty, professional and specialty insurance coverages. Todd joins XL Catlin from Allied World where he led a Chicago-based team in developing and implementing a national distribution plan to grow profitably throughout the region. A 25-year insurance industry career includes tenure with Axis Capital, Kemper Insurance, and AIG. His region consists of 12 states including Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kentucky and West Virginia.
Simone Te Kamp was promoted to Senior Underwriter, Environmental, Benelux, of XL Catlin on April 1, 2018. She is responsible for the growth of environmental insurance business in Benelux.
